NAF – Die Werkstatt (the workshop)

Work and Productivity (2018)

Edition #1
Edition #2

Nana Hülsewig and Fender Schrade (NAF) invite you to work. As much as possible shall be published. Other artists will come along. Where is the dividing line between work and life? Is there a specific form of artistic work and how does it relate to the necessity and will of earning money and getting famous? If you are destined to produce something worthless in a capitalist sense – who decides about yea or nay? Sometimes we go in search for reliable quality criteria. Sometimes we are working on new forms of handicraft. Or just ask: what percentage of your applications have been approved?

Many different aspects of art work will be brought to light. For instance the waste of our own art production. Abandoned ideas, forgotten drafts, failed applications. Or required work steps for which there is no time in everyday production – or do you think one invents an instrument just overnight which is 6 meters long, has 392 keys and how and where it can be played?  In the field of tension between practical use and purpose-free, pure art we will have a drink together and exchange toughts, ideas and experiences in “Die Werkstatt”.

Expectations and Rejections
Lab
13.10.2018, from 7:00 p.m. Theater Rampe, Stuttgart

Who expects something from a planned artistic work and who can reject this expectation? Is applying an application already part of the artistic work or just a necessary evil of obedience towards fulfilling what needs to be done?  Is there any use of having discussions about it – or should we rather build a wellness center together for artists applying and put and end to evil by pure enjoyment. And by the way: do you actually invoice the writing time of the application for the potential funding authorities? In the field of tension between practical use and purpose-free, pure art we will have a drink together and exchange thoughts, ideas and experiences in “Die Werkstatt”. Maybe we have a guest with experience for the financial conversations. Let’s see how much we can get done…

Musikwerkstatt
Lab
01.12.2018, from 07:00 p.m. Theater Rampe, Stuttgart

Instruments can be described as bodies. In their construction they follow certain standards – a standardized body of instrument bear a name and entails specific forms of playing. The deformed 6m-piano of NAF breaks out of these presets. For instance it takes several people to play it and thus stands for a common and collective functioning of exploring music and being together. What significance does the idea of friendship have on good music? Fender Schrade and the lecturer and cultural agent Tom Heinzer from Zurich want to explore the interaction of social, musical action and the body of the player and instrument. His works, often working together, are a permanent questioning of one’s own actions and the nature and potential of art itself. Most of the questioning proceeds by recorded moments of negatives, that is “non-art making”. Inactivity as a creation? Intriguing! Let’s see how this could sound. In the field of tension between practical use and purpose-free, pure art we will have a drink and make some music together in “Die Werkstatt”.

Special guest:
Tom Heinzer (Zurich)

After studying Fine Arts and a master’s degree in Art Education, Tom Heinzer works as a visual artist and as a lecturer at the Zurich University of the Arts in Preparatory training and as a cultural agent for the canton of Zurich.
